Treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia using HOLEP

post-11

The effects of benign prostate enlargement begin to appear in the 50s. It is a common disease that occurs in one out of every two men at the age of 60 and in all men at the age of 80. In this disease, enlarged prostate tissue causes narrowing of the urinary tract. Patients experience a variety of urgency (sudden urge to urinate and frequent urination at night) and occlusive symptoms (difficulty initiating urination, intermittent urination, and decreased urine output). The quality of daily life decreases. In the later period, the kidneys and bladder may also be damaged.

When methods such as TUR, bipolar TUR or Greenlight are preferred in the closed surgical treatment of benign prostate enlargement, the prostate tissue cannot be completely removed. Remaining prostate tissue may cause bleeding or enlarge over time, causing urinary complaints to recur.

HOLEP (Holmium Laser Enucleation of Prostate) surgery is performed by a closed method with the help of laser, by entering through the urinary canal of the patient. The enlarged prostate is separated from its capsule and removed, and the prostate tissue that is compressing the urinary tract is completely removed. The disease is unlikely to recur. The prostate does not grow back. It can be applied to prostates of all sizes.

The tissue depth of the applied laser is 0.4 millimeters. It has no negative effects on masculine nerves. It has no side effects on erection. Urinary incontinence due to the operation does not occur. HOLEP is the surgical method that best protects the urinary sphincter muscles.

In the last 10 years, HOLEP surgery has become the gold standard for benign prostate hyperplasia in all European countries and United States of America. It can also be safely preferred in patients with heart and lung problems. This surgery can be performed safely by arranging the drugs of the patients using blood thinners before the surgery.
