One of the routine procedures performed in the diagnosis and follow-up of hematological diseases is bone marrow aspiration and biopsy. Although it sounds scary, it is a very safe procedure when duly performed by experienced hands.
Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy should be performed in unexplained blood value disorders, suspected leukemia, spleen enlargement of unknown cause, and some lymph node cancers.
The aspiration process is the removal of the marrow fluid in the spongy region of the bone (usually the most protruding part of the hip bone) with the help of a needle and spreading it on the glasses. The biopsy procedure, on the other hand, can be summarized as taking a 1.5-2 cm long piece from the immediate vicinity of the bone and spongy region in the same region with the help of a special set.
These procedures can usually be performed under local anesthesia at the patient's bedside. In patients with low pain threshold, a more comfortable procedure can be performed by performing "sedoanalgesia" before the procedure. After the procedure area is cleaned, it is anesthetized by giving local anesthesia and aspiration and biopsy are taken with special bone marrow sets. The procedure takes between 15-30 minutes and is observed in the patient's bed for 1-2 hours. Afterwards, the patient can be discharged by controlling the bleeding.
Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy procedures requested by hematology or another doctor can be performed safely in our hospital.
Don't let your fear get in the way of your health!!!
