Are you ready to be a mother?
Being a mother is the right of every woman. The success of in vitro
fertilization (IVF) treatment is high in the treatment of patients who cannot
conceive through normal means.
In vitro fertilization treatment
(IVF) covers the treatment process that ensures fertilization by collecting
eggs, which are female reproductive cells, and sperm, which are male
reproductive cells, and bringing them together in a laboratory environment
outside the body.
IVF
treatment consists of three stages: preparation of eggs, egg collection and
fertilization, and embryo transfer.
For the preparation of eggs, two
parallel hormone treatments are applied, which ensure egg development and
prevent early ovulation. Ultrasound and blood tests are performed at regular
intervals to monitor the response of the ovaries to this treatment. With
ultrasound, the follicles (eggs) developing in the ovaries are measured in
number and size. The matured eggs are collected with the help of transvaginal
ultrasound after they are cracked with a fracturing needle.
Egg collection is done under
general anesthesia because it is painful. It can also be performed under
sedation or local anesthesia. The process takes about 10-15 minutes. These
collected eggs are fertilized in the laboratory with sperm taken from the male.
Fertilized eggs are left to develop in a temperature and atmosphere controlled
culture environment in the laboratory for 2-3 days.
One or two of the well-developed
embryos are selected and placed back into the uterus, which is called embryo transfer.
Embryo transfer is done with the help of a catheter on the gynecological
examination table. Rarely anesthesia and sedation are required. It is aimed
that the embryos attach to the intrauterine wall (endometrium) and create
pregnancy. The day of the transfer is decided by evaluating many factors such
as the age of the woman, the treatment history, the number and quality of the
embryos.
After the embryo transfer
process, 12 days are expected until the day of the pregnancy test. The success
rate of the first IVF attempt between the ages of 20 and 30 is around 65-70%.
Between the ages of 30-35, the chance of success is 50%. As the age increases,
the chance of success of IVF treatment decreases.
