Varicose veins are the enlargement and twisting of the vein as a result of weakening of the vein wall and deterioration of the valve structure in the legs.
The veins act like a pump to carry blood from the tissues to the heart. Muscle contractions caused by walking and exercise help the blood flow towards the heart by compressing the vessel wall. Due to reasons such as sedentary life, familial and environmental factors, the veins expand over time and cause the valve structure of the veins to deteriorate, forming varicose veins. It is 4 times more common in women than men.
Varicose veins initially cause aesthetic problems that no one wants, such as darkening of the skin, dryness, blue-purple color, curved and puffy appearance. When varicose veins progress, they cause health problems such as throbbing pain, burning, edema, bleeding on the skin, ulcers, and inflammatory clot formation.
You can prevent the formation of varicose veins or slow the progression of varicose veins by making some beneficial changes in your lifestyle. Controlling stress, a diet rich in fiber and low in salt can be beneficial. Walking, running, cycling and swimming are beneficial for keeping veins healthy. High heels and tight clothing should not be worn. Do not sit still for long periods of time. Whenever possible, it may be beneficial to extend the legs to a high place for 10-15 minutes and rest.
If varicose veins continue to progress despite these precautions, compression stockings can be used. Sclerotherapy and transdermal laser treatment are effective methods for small and medium sized varicose veins (spider and reticular veins). Transdermal laser treatment is applied to capillaries that are 1 mm and smaller, and sclerotherapy treatment is applied to those that are larger than 1 mm. Both treatments are performed in sessions. No anesthesia or hospitalization is required.
In endovenous radiofrequency or laser treatment, a radiofrequency or laser catheter is inserted into the enlarged superficial varicose vein. With this method, the varicose vein is closed by burning. Additional foam treatment can be applied for large varicose side branches, if any, or they can be removed with small incisions of 2-3 mm. This method takes less than 1 hour and the patient can be discharged on the same day. After the procedure, complaints resolve quickly. It is possible to return to daily life immediately. There may be bruising on the legs for a temporary period (1 week-10 days). There are no scars or stitches. The success rate is close to 100% and there is no recurrence in the treated vessels.
The surgical treatment of varicose veins is the removal of varicose superficial veins through incisions made in the inguinal region and ankle. Since it is a surgical procedure performed under general anesthesia, 1 day of hospitalization is required.
